FAQ

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to Muslim medical students, residents, fellows and early-career physicians who:

  • Are studying or training at a medical school or program in the United States or Canada
  • If a resident, fellow or attending physician, graduated from a U.S. or Canadian medical school (MD or DO)
  • If an attending physician, completed residency or fellowship on or after July 1, 2021
  • Can attend the monthly virtual sessions from January through August 2027 and the national summit in September 2027

No coding skills or prior AI experience are required. We welcome applicants from every specialty and career stage who want to help shape how AI is used in medicine.

What Do I need to Apply?

Please have these ready before you begin. You can save your application and return to finish it later.

  • Your CV (PDF, 3 pages or fewer)
  • A one-page letter of support from a faculty member, supervisor or mentor who knows your work
  • Residents and fellows: a short signed note from your program director confirming your program supports your participation
  • Medical students: an unofficial transcript
  • Answers to four short essay questions (up to 250 words each) about your interest in AI, a capstone project idea, your leadership experience, and the risks AI poses for patients
How are Fellows Selected?

A selection committee reviews every application. We look for a strong capstone idea, leadership potential, and a clear commitment to AI in medicine. Financial need is also part of selection: the application asks about household income and educational debt, and this information is reviewed separately by IMANA staff, not by the committee reading your essays.

What is the Time Commitment?

Each month from January through August 2027, fellows attend a one-hour virtual session and complete 20–30 minutes of reading or video beforehand. Fellows also meet with their mentor, complete a capstone project by August 31, 2027, and present it at the national summit in September 2027. Summit travel is funded.
