On Saturday February 24, 2018, United Muslim Relief (UMR) and Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA) once again came together to raise awareness for the needy Rohingya people. The event was held in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Islamic Society of Greater Charlotte. Our four speakers, Sheikh Yasir Birjas, Hamza Abdullah (former NFL player), Dr. Abdulhakim Mohamed (motivational speaker), and SaveRohingya volunteer, Dr. Salim Saiyed; shared their thoughts and opinions of the crisis in Mynammar.
The turnout of the fundraising event was great. One hundred people showed up and raised twenty four thousand dollars to help the Rohingya people in Bangladesh. All four speakers engaged with the audience, and motivated everyone to give back to help save lives. IMANA likes to thank all four speakers who participated, and we are truly grateful for all the people who attended.
The Burma Task Force, a grouping of like-minded NGOs, observed Rohingya Advocacy Day on Wednesday, Feb 28 to raise awareness and lobby for imposition of comprehensive sanctions on the Myanmar regime by visiting Capitol Hill. Volunteers gathered in the Longworth building, were briefed by the organizers, formed into several teams of 4-6 individuals and then visited the offices of several Senators and Congressmen to highlight the issue, almost 55 in all. IMANA was represented by our Relief Coordinator, he was among the very few volunteers whose organization is actively involved with Rohingya refugees. His team met with staffers of two Congressmen and one Senator and met one Congressman, Rep Khanna from California. The team was well received, their concerns were noted and all the legislators assured their support to House Bill H.4223 which proposes the imposition of sanctions.
IMANA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations to IMANAMedical Relief are tax exempt. Tax ID: #36-4166125
