The Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA) announces “An Evening with Champions,” a benefit dinner on October 27 featuring groundbreaking American Muslim athletes. Proceeds from the benefit will go to IMANA, a nonprofit organization that focuses on medical relief worldwide.
The event will feature stories of two American Muslim athletes in particular: Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first American woman to compete in Olympics in hijab, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, the former Denver Nuggets player known for continually standing up for his beliefs. Muhammad was the first Muslim woman to win an Olympic medal for the United States. Abdul-Rauf was third overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft and twice led the league in free throw percentage.
“It is an honor to stand side by side with these athletes who have made it their personal mission to strive for equality and acceptance,” said Akrama Hashmi, IMANA Managing Director. “Our organization strives for equity in health care across the globe, and their support will help us make a bigger impact.”
The dinner event will include a meet and greet, autographs, and a live auction. Items for auction include a sabre signed by Muhammad and a basketball signed by Abdul-Rauf.
