Children suffering from cleft lips and palates are a major medical issue in Sudan. They have difficulty in eating and speaking, they are often teased by their peers forcing them into isolation and shame. Most of them drop out of school making it extremely difficult to find gainful employment as they get older. These children and their families are left in a lifetime of social and economic poverty.
IMANA Medical Relief’s SaveSmile program has built an effective surgical team of volunteer plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, family practitioners, emergency medicine and support staff. The mission completed 10 years in 2019, with a total of 1,538 cleft lip surgeries in Khartoum.
In 2020, our team traveled to the newly built Al Ubayyid International Hospital in El-Obeid, North Kordofan and gave a new smile to 130 individuals.
Your contribution gives renewed hope to children and families who have been dealing with shame, social stigma for being born with clefts and are seen as a curse in their community. A cleft lip can be repaired for $200 in as few as 30 minutes, promising the patient with a life-changing procedure along with a gift of a new smile 😊
