Lombard, IL – Oday Aboushi, the first Palestinian-American ever drafted into the NFL, will be speaking at “A Champion Kickoff to Ramadan,” a benefit dinner on April 6 organized by the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA). The largest Muslim health care organization in North America, IMANA has over 4,500 members nationwide and is a leading resource and network for American-Muslim physicians, dentists and other health care professionals in North America. Besides initiatives in continuing medical education (CME), professional networking opportunities for health care practitioners, and mentoring for medical students and undergraduates, a main focus of the organization is on medical relief.
IMANA Medical Relief (IMR) began in 2003 with disaster relief in one country and has now expanded to an impact on over 2.5 million patients in 27 countries to date. Its volunteers, the majority Muslim, travel around the globe to treat people after natural disasters, in conflict zones, and in underdeveloped regions. One of IMR’s most significant projects is with the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, where it has been sending weekly medical missions since December 2017 and has now impacted over 200,000 patients as of this week.
The event will focus on the stories of prominent American-Muslims. Aboushi will join Ambassador Shabazz, diplomat and daughter of Malcolm X, and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, the first NCAA Division 1 basketball player to play wearing hijab.
The event will take place on Saturday, April 6 at 6 pm, at the Rochester Riverside Hotel, located at 120 East Main Street in Rochester. There will be an opportunity for speaker meet and greet, autographs, and to participate in a live auction.
