The consequential effects of hurricane Maria in 2017 left Puerto Rico’s healthcare infrastructure in shambles. Following this devastation, IMANA initially responded with multiple medical teams to address the urgent need for emergency medicine and aid in recovery efforts at understaffed health facilities. To this day, Puerto Rico’s healthcare infrastructure continues to suffer due to a shortage of qualified healthcare personnel and limited access to healthcare facilities in the poorer suburbs and rural areas throughout the island.

The age demographics have rapidly shifted as many younger individuals moved to the United States mainland year after year. Commuting to and having healthcare access for even the most basic needs for the older population left behind has become difficult. A combination of these factors, mixed with the many low-income population concentrations, have created a unique healthcare concern that IMANA aims to tackle and alleviate in its capacity as a medical relief organization. During the inaugural mission to the island, our volunteer physician team was able to provide care to 230 patients.
