Continuing Medical Education Activities

May 24th, 2022

Medicine is not an easy profession. Not only do you need several years of education to become a professional in your field, but you also need to keep learning because healthcare is continuously evolving.
CME (continuing medical education) activities or CME events can provide a more targeted approach to improving patient care. They help practitioners develop skills, knowledge, and relationships, all while advancing in their field of choice.

What Are CME Activities?

CME refers to educational activities (generally happening in multi-modal instructional events) that help practitioners stay up-to-date in the ever-changing field of medicine.

This enables them to give the best possible care to their patients while developing their careers. CME also develops their competencies, improves their knowledge and skills, and enhances their professional performance.

During these events, content is prepared, reviewed, and delivered by experts in their respective clinical fields with the goal of encouraging lifelong learning. These CME events are free of promotional content and undue influence from pharmaceutical and other commercial sponsors.

This is done to ensure that the learning space is unbiased and free of financial motivation.

Continuing Medical Education Activities Are Available Online and Can Be Accessed Globally

Category 1 CME credits can be obtained via multimedia presentations that are available on the internet and can be accessed from anywhere in the world.

This makes it an ideal setup for people outside the US who wish to retain their licensing and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Why Is CME Important?

The medical field is constantly evolving to accommodate new discoveries, new technology and innovations, and new areas of interest. It’s thus vital that practitioners continue their education by attending CME programs.

CME events help health care providers:

  • Learn and discover new ways to improve patient care, satisfaction, and outcomes
  • Stay up-to-date with the new and developing areas in their medical specialty
  • Meet licensing and certification requirements set forth by states and hospitals
  • Improve all aspects of their performance beyond their expertise in their core specialty
  • Increase inter-specialty collaboration
  • Meet specialty board certifications
  • Address real-world challenges faced by healthcare providers
  • Learn effective team management skills
  • Gain professional growth and access to special professional organizations to advance career status

These events help healthcare providers effectively manage their careers while increasing their knowledge and keeping up with the evolving medical landscape. This is why the importance of CME events is unmatched.

IMANA Continuing Medical Education Activities 2022

Healthcare professionals must carefully sift through the many CME courses and conventions available to find the ones that will be of most value to them. An ideal CME course or convention should benefit a professional’s entire medical career.

Those in search of relevant CME conventions can consider the IMANA (Islamic Medical Association of North America) Annual Convention in Jekyll Island, Georgia.

What Is IMANA’s Annual CME Convention?

Each year in July, IMANA holds an annual CME convention. The event features live interactive educational events like conferences, workshops, and meetings.

All these are planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of ACCME (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education) and IMANA.

The conference provides guests with up-to-date knowledge and strategies as well as opportunities to build and improve their skill sets. Their learnings can then be applied to their clinical practices, teaching, or research.

In addition, the event stresses the significance of using evidence-based medicine to improve patient outcomes and increases learners’ competencies and performance to provide better patient care.

What Differentiates a Physician Who is Trained in These Conventions From Those Who Are Not?

CME conventions have long and short-term advantages. The John Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Center reviewed 28 studies to assess the knowledge gained by medical professionals through CME. By doing so, they learned that:

  • 22 or 79% of studies showed an improvement in knowledge
  • 15 out of 22 studies (68%) with follow-up showed long-term knowledge retention

Additionally, five studies were examined to see how effective a single CME intervention strategy was compared to multiple techniques. Two of the five studies found that using diverse learning methods increased knowledge. This strengthens the belief that multiple modality CMEs are good indicators of competency.

Effectiveness of IMANA Continuing Medical Education Activities

Registering, attending, and participating in CME activities can help medical practitioners meet standards set forth by concerned authorities. This is in line with the demands of most professions that require their workforce to be up-to-date with the latest knowledge and developments in their industries.

For example, to maintain their medical license, several states and most hospitals require practitioners to obtain a certain number of credits each year. Hospitals make this a requirement for regulatory reasons and to ensure the quality of care for patients.

In the same vein, hospitals assist their practitioners in obtaining and maintaining college fellowships.

Physicians who attend CME programs not only remain updated but also boost their chances of working in their dream facilities with the competitive edge they gain through them.

What Topics Will Be Discussed at the IMANA’s Annual CME Convention?

Mental health, COVID-19, telehealth, and advancements in medicine are some of the topics that will be discussed at IMANA’s annual CME convention.

How To Be Part of IMANA’s Annual Convention Speakers

To be considered as a speaker for the conference, a candidate must submit an abstract in English that is relevant to all physicians regardless of specialty. It can be submitted as a hard copy or electronically and must use a structured format.

The abstract must include all the information requested along with proper documentation. All presenters must be registered for the medical conference and convention.
