Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA) held its 50th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting on July 23th – 30th, 2017 on a Mediterranean Cruise. 375 guests joined us for a seven-night round-trip journey to Spain, Italy, and France with family and friends celebrating IMANA’s 50th Anniversary.

From the breathtaking views of the sea while sailing the cruise ship, to the fun filled tours in Spain, Italy & France, and the engaging Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, our 50th Anniversary was truly a convention to remember for all IMANA guests.

Families enjoyed delicious Halal cuisines and engaged in a plethora of activities on the Freedom of the Seas Royal Caribbean cruise ship for the duration of the convention. Among the activities were spiritually engaging lectures and prayers led by Dr. Abdulhakim Mohamed and Azhar Azeez. The IMANA Ladies Night allowed women to share inspiring and unforgettable sisterly dialogue. The kids were kept entertained by broadway shows and fun activities like water surfing, rock wall climbing, mini-golf, and more.

The CME committee organized an advanced learning environment for physicians in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment, which was attended by 125 IMANA members. The theme of the scientific meeting was “Medicine in Turbulent Times,” and offered a total of 8 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. A diverse faculty covered the CME theme with various engaging topics. Opioids, Low Carbohydrate Diets, Robotic Surgery, Fat Reduction Methods, Anxiety Disorder Treatments, Stroke Prevention, and Chiropractic Care were only some of the topics explored.

IMANA held its Annual Banquet on the evening of Saturday, July 29th. Dr. Nabile Safdar was our delighted emcee for the evening. He provided welcoming remarks to our guests and kept the audience lively. Dr. Asif Malik shared his closing remarks as president affirming how IMANA’s 50th anniversary is an important milestone at the gratitude of all the members who have made this turning point possible. We recognize his diligent support towards our recent CME Accreditation. The IMANA Medical Relief (IMR) Humanitarian Award honoree was Dr. Khalique Zahir, for his dedicated passion to serve humanity through IMR. Sandra Barnhart, President of University at Sea, was also awarded for going above and beyond to help plan memorable IMANA cruise conventions including the 2013 Alaska cruise.

Dr. Abdulhakim Mohamed, IMR Director of Development, shared his experience with IMR in Sudan, Haiti, and Jordan as a testimony of IMANA’s impact.

A special moment occurred when Dr. Imran Qureshi took his position as IMANA 45th president with the organization’s first IMANA President in attendance, Dr. Syed Mubin Akhtar.
